The winning project, “Kak-Christ-Mud: The Pride of Khon Kaen Christmas Tree 2025,” is located at Central Khonkaen and represents a powerful collaboration between Central Pattana, BWILD ISAN designer Kanchana Shnatepaporn, and architects Phongsakorn Onpradit and Borritat Sawantrat from ATTA STUDIO. The Creative Excellence Awards 2025 is a national platform that honors and celebrates Thai creative achievements, organized by the Creative Economy Agency (Public Organization) – CEA, under the supervision of the Office of the Prime Minister. Inspiration Behind “Kak-Christ-Mud”: The Meaning and Story of Collaboration

The project “Kak-Christ-Mud: The Pride of Khon Kaen Christmas Tree 2025” is a creative collaboration between Central Pattana, BWILD ISAN, and ATTA STUDIO — entrepreneurs from the Por Laew Dee program. Together, they applied the Philosophy of Sufficiency Economy to reimagine the festive season, transforming a Christmas tree into a symbol of collaboration and shared prosperity, generating income for local housewives, artisans, and university students. The name “Kak-Christ-Mud” carries deep meaning: “Kak” means the best in the Isan dialect — not necessarily the most beautiful, but the best from the perspective of the Isan people. “Christ” comes from Christmas. “Mud” refers to mudmee, the traditional tie-dye silk weaving technique that symbolizes Khon Kaen’s identity as a World Craft City for Mudmee Silk, recognized by the World Crafts Council in 2018.

The “Kak-Christ-Mud” Christmas tree is a Heart-Made & Handcrafted creation, entirely handmade to embody the charm of “Lahm Mee” — the intricate process of tying and dyeing silk threads to create beautiful red-and-gold patterns that reflect Isan craftsmanship in a contemporary form. Sustainability is at the core of the design, with all materials sourced from local communities and thoughtfully crafted for reuse and continued value creation. Bamboo, used as the first layer to cover the steel frame of the Christmas tree, serves as a low-carbon material that can later be repurposed by local farmers to build duck and chicken coops or agricultural shelters. Other materials such as rope, thread, and wooden bobbins, which were crafted into star shapes as part of the design, are later reused and redesigned into multipurpose tables or dining tables donated to orphanages in Khon Kaen province. Every element was handcrafted by local artisans, not only generating income but also instilling a sense of community pride and shared joy that radiates from the Christmas tree to everyone who experiences it. Thus, “Kak-Christ-Mud” is more than a decorative city installation — it is a symbol of how festive seasons can become platforms for creativity, collaboration, and community empowerment, enabling local people to participate, earn a livelihood, and share inspiration from local wisdom with people across the nation.
