A world-class Thai heritage of Thai food and performances at Thara Thong, Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers

Thara Thong, its name translating as Golden River, is an evocative setting for Royal Thai cuisine, with its richly decorated interior evoking a glorious teakwood pavilion and traditional seating around low tables. Authentic Thai dishes are prepared with care and served with the creativity and style befitting of the Royal Court, while guests enjoy the gentle sounds of Thai classical music, seated indoors or outdoors on the terrace, and take in the inspiring views of the Chao Phraya River.

Thai food has become a culinary art known and praised throughout the world. The cuisine owes much to the influences of the Indian and Chinese cultures. Fresh herbs and spices including garlic, coriander, lemongrass, mint and chillies are important ingredients. Thai chefs avoid making the dishes too chilli-hot, striving instead to reach a perfect harmony in taste and aroma. A meal consists of at least three dishes and rice, all served simultaneously, and with no particular sequence in eating.

Thara Thong is preparing cuisine from recipes handed down for centuries, adjusted to today’s taste and served in an authentic manner. The aromas and flavours of Thara Thong’s cuisine, our best kept secret, include three dishes that have recently been listed amongst CNN Travel World’s 50 Best Foods.

Massaman Curry is named as the World No 1 dish by CNN Travel, which describes it as ‘the king of curries, and perhaps the king of all foods’. Tom Yam Kung, spicy shrimp soup, is listed in 8th place by CNN Travel. Som Tam, papaya salad, is placed at 46th on the CNN Travel list.

Along with Thara Thong’s heritage cuisine, the Executive Chef Tomas Keskitalo has added signature dishes that draw upon classic Thai recipes and interprets them for a modern audience.

Larb Nua Poo Avocado is the much loved larb salad, made with crab meat and avocado, while Tom Yam Hoi Shell has the familiar spiciness of Tom-Yam with sea scallops. Pla Nueng Samunpai is snow fish softly steamed with Southern yellow curry, and Ped Yang Sauce Makham is organic farm duck breast char-grilled with five spice and hoisin sauce. For dessert, Tart Mamuang is a mango tart with honey and vanilla ice cream.

Thara Thong also presents a traditional dance performance from each of four regions. (from Thursday to Sunday, start at 7:00 pm)

Highlighted is Khon, the beautiful and mesmerising masked dance drama of Thailand. An unmistakably valuable element of Thai culture and a wonderful depiction of ‘Thainess’, Khon is now on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Follow by Phon Pang, the Northern style that is influenced by neighbouring countries Myanmar, Laos and China, and ethnic minority cultures such as Thai Yai, Ngiao, Yong, and Thai hill tribe people.

Rabum Praewa Kalasin is from the North East, the influences being Lao, with the costumes deriving from the traditions of Issan. Folk instruments used include the kaen, harp, fiddle, Issan long drum, cymbals and gongs, while the dance style is energetic, fast, and fun.

Rabum Talegeepas, from the South, which has absorbed much of the Malay culture. The dance moves  resemble decisive body movements rather than dances, and the mood is fun and lively.

At Thara Thong, we bring a small part of the performance that sees Hanuman chasing Nang Suphanna Matcha, in an episode from Ramakian, the greatest Thai literary work, influenced by the Indian Ramayana.

Thara Thong is the riverside venue that will deliver Thainess to everyone, Thai and visitors from overseas alike. Thailand’s cultural legacy is presented here, in the use of teak wood fashioned into a style reminiscent of the Royal Courts, and with the traditional seating around low tables. Classical arts such as fruit and vegetable carving are on display. Thai classical dance presentations, drawing upon the cultural influences from the four regions, and with mesmerising performances and music, infuse any occasion at Thara Thong with the mystique of Old Siam. The cuisine, prepared by chefs who have deep understanding of the culinary legacy, is richly authentic, and presents dishes that have justifiably become world-famous.
